JUNE FOCUS: PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY
With a combined annual marketing spend of nearly $11.5 billion, it's no wonder entire books have been written about trends in pharmaceutical promotions. It's an enormous business opportunity and everyone is looking to get their piece – or at least sliver – of this staggering revenue pie.

While regulatory crackdowns have made it more challenging to tap into the pharmaceutical sector, they have also created an opening for savvy marketers who understand how to make their promotional products relevant under the new guidelines. Because of their online delivery component, digital entertainment incentives are an ideal fit.

Music download promotions can be used to drive physicians to an online information site that educates them about the new drug being introduced – giving pharmaceuticals a valuable resource to offer the medical community. And because of their low cost, digital entertainment incentives can meet the $2 premium cap some pharmaceuticals are now working under.

Beyond physician leave behinds, digital entertainment incentives serve as powerful direct-to-consumer premiums, consumer outreach tools, trade show or conference giveaways and employee incentives/training tools. Because recipients must go online to redeem the digital content, they can first be directed to an information page that provides details about a new drug, or to a registration page that captures valuable customer info for ongoing marketing. And because digital entertainment incentives can be delivered through a custom-branded card, they serve as a mini-billboard for pharmaceuticals looking to build awareness for a new drug.

SOOTHING MUSIC SERVES AS AWARENESS TOOL FOR ONLINE MS TREATMENT RESOURCE
Pharmaceutical companies Biogen Idec and Elan were looking for an innovative way to make MS patients aware of MS ActiveSource – a new online resource focused on treatment options for Multiple Sclerosis. The companies found the solution they were looking for with a music download program tailored around relaxing spa music.

Knowing that listening to soothing music helps MS patients to relax and has become a mainstay of MS therapy, Biogen Idec and Elan viewed a music giveaway as a perfect way to make people aware of different treatment options to help MS.

Working with their distributor, CFS developed a customized music store landing page for MS ActiveSource featuring a collection of soothing songs. Customized music cards good for 5 free songs were mailed out to 50,000 patients. To redeem their songs, recipients were routed to the MS ActiveSource music page sponsored by Biogen Idec and Elan.

NEWS YOU CAN USE: PHARMACEUTICALS INCREASE DIRECT MARKETING, ONLINE INITIATIVES
The pharmaceutical industry is turning its attention – and dollars – to direct marketing, according to a new report by the Direct Marketing Association.

The report, titled “Direct Marketing Facts and Figures in the Pharmaceutical Industry,” projects that pharmaceuticals will spend more than $1 billion on direct marketing in 2008, resulting in revenues of $10.6 billion – and predicts this number to grow at a rate of 9.4 percent annually.

Internet and email marketing are the two biggest growth categories identified, with email spending expected to increase by a compound annual growth rate of nearly 22% from 2007 to 2012, and annual Internet advertising predicted to reach $173 million by 2012, up from an expected $93.6 million this year. Because digital incentives go hand in hand with both email and online advertising, these growth trends pave the way for huge opportunities with digital entertainment promotions. In addition to driving consumers to a specific web page filled with information about a new drug and its benefits, digital entertainment promotions can include a powerful online survey component that enables pharmaceuticals to collect valuable consumer feedback.
